Notice to Navigation Interests: NTN 2017-009

Notice is given that 72 hours prior to a Tropical Storm or Hurricane making
local landfall locks will be open 7 AM to 10 PM supporting vessel safe
harbor passage. Lock operations will stop 8 hours prior to land fall as Rail
Road and drawbridges will be lowered or rotated and locked into a secure
position. It’s important that all vessels are at their intended destination
before bridges are secured and passage across the waterway suspended.

For Lock Operator safety the locks will:

  1. Stop locking vessels or working outdoors if lightning is observed within
five miles of the lock and operations will not resume until lightning has
not been seen in the area for 30 minutes.
  2. Stop locking vessels when winds exceed 35 MPH.

After a storm it could be days or weeks before the waterway is reopen
depending on damage to structures and how quickly debris creating navigation
hazards can be removed.

Anglers can take advantage of more Gulf red snapper fishing starting this weekend

This Friday, June 16, begins the first weekend of an additional 39-day season for recreational red snapper fishing in Gulf federal waters and changes to the state season. The U.S. Department of Commerce announced these expanded fishing opportunities today, and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) followed with an executive order setting the updated season in state waters.

The 39-day season is open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from Friday, June 16, through Monday, Sept. 4. Also included are Monday and Tuesday, July 3 and 4, and Monday, Sept. 4.

“Recreational red snapper fishing is highly important to Florida’s Gulf coast communities,” said FWC Executive Director Nick Wiley. “We are thankful for the leadership of Gov. Rick Scott, U. S. Department of Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross and Florida’s Congressional delegation as well as the partnership across all five Gulf states in providing more sustainable fishing opportunities and sound fisheries management.”

This is the longest Gulf federal red snapper season since 2013. State waters will be open the rest of this week and, beginning Monday, June 19, will close Mondays through Thursdays through Sept. 4, except July 3 and 4. The three-day weekend federal waters season opens Friday, June 16.

“Though we had to reduce state waters fishing days in the summer and fall, we are pleased to be able to offer more fishing access this summer to anglers across Florida,” Wiley said.

“This is great news, especially for anglers on the central and southwest Gulf coast, where red snapper are not commonly found in state waters,” said FWC Vice Chairman Liesa Priddy.

A Boater’s Guide to Handling Oil and Fuel Spills

With the start of the summer season, we hope you are enjoying time on the water. With that in mind, we have created a Gulf-wide one-page guide on how to prepare for and respond to an accidental oil or fuel spill on your own vessel. This fact sheet—printed on waterproof paper for on-board storing—will tell you what products to have in place to prevent and/or contain leaking oil and which authorities to call for help in every Gulf state. Like our products and want to help us spread the word? Please email [email protected] if you would like to order hard copies of this or any of our other outreach publications in bulk for distribution.

FWC Commission to discuss changes to Gulf red snapper season during special meeting Friday June 9

*This News Release was originally posted by the FWC Commission HERE

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) will have a special meeting at 2 p.m. EDT Friday, June 9, to discuss the Gulf red snapper season for private recreational anglers in state and federal waters. Recent discussion between the U.S. Department of Commerce and the Gulf states indicate that there may be a way to add a substantial number of additional red snapper fishing days in federal waters this summer of 2017, but Florida would have to give days to get days.

Discussions are focused on aligning a possible expanded federal water season on weekends and holidays through the summer with existing seasons for state waters across all five Gulf states, including Florida. Staff will be requesting Commission direction and guidance regarding this season alignment, which would require giving up some state waters fishing days (during the week) through the summer and possibly in the fall. These changes would apply only to private recreational anglers. No changes to the commercial or recreational for-hire seasons are being considered.

This special meeting is being held by electronic media technology, such as online and via phone, and the Commissioners will be participating remotely via conference call. There will be opportunities for the public to comment during the meeting. Information about how to participate remotely is being finalized and, when posted, will be found at MyFWC.com/About by clicking on “The Commission” and “Commission Meetings.”

“Red snapper is a popular and economically-important species in Florida, and the FWC is committed to providing as much sustainable recreational fishing opportunity as possible,” said Nick Wiley, FWC executive director. “This meeting will give our Commissioners the opportunity to discuss expanding recreational red snapper fishing opportunities in federal waters, to hear from the public and stakeholders, and provide direction to staff.”

The 2017 red snapper season for private recreational anglers in Florida federal waters was June 1-3. In state waters, the 2017 season is currently 78-days total. The season opened for Saturdays and Sundays starting May 6, and has been open daily since May 27. The season is scheduled to continue being open each day through July 9, then reopen Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in September and October, including Labor Day.

Comments on red snapper seasons can also be sent to FWC staff today through noon Thursday, June 8, at MyFWC.com/SaltwaterComments or at [email protected].
